Elevate Your Free Time: Recreational Activities to Relax, Refresh, and Rejuvenate

Victoria Shilongo, a woman riding on a horse.

Hey there, lovely soul! You know how life sometimes feels like it’s moving at lightning speed, and we’re caught up in this cycle of stress, busyness, and “go-go-go”?

Well, let me tell you something—there’s so much more to life than rushing from one thing to the next.

ADD ADVENTURE INTO YOUR LIFE

God didn’t design us to live in constant stress. He created us to thrive, to enjoy His creation, and to connect with the world in beautiful ways. One of the best ways to do that? By trying new activities that not only refresh your body and mind but also invite the Holy Spirit into your everyday life.

So, I’m here to share a few fun, enriching, and spirit-lifting activities that will help you step out of your comfort zone, try something new, and feel deeply connected to God’s presence.

Horse Riding: Freedom and Connection

Picture this: You’re riding a beautiful horse, the wind brushing your face, the rhythm of the horse’s steps syncing with your heartbeat. It’s peaceful, grounding, and honestly, a little majestic.

Horse riding is definitely not just you sitting on a saddle and steering a horse—it embodies a beautiful connection between you and one of God’s most majestic creations.

When you’re riding, you feel the every move; yet it’s about trust.

The horse feels your energy, and you learn to guide it with calmness and intention.

Beyond that, riding brings a sense of freedom, like the wind carrying you forward. It’s a reminder of how life flows when you let go of fear and work in harmony with God’s plans.

You’ll discover strength you didn’t know you had, both in your body and your spirit.

You see, riding a horse requires you to let go of fear and connect with the animal, much like how we trust the Holy Spirit to guide us. It’s also a chance to marvel at God’s creation. Horses are so powerful yet so gentle—what a reflection of God’s love, right?

How to Begin: Don’t worry if you’ve never been around horses. Local riding schools will teach you the basics, and soon enough, you’ll feel confident and at ease. The first step is to show up and try!

As you ride, take a moment to pray or simply thank God for the beauty of nature. Let the experience remind you of the strength and gentleness of the Holy Spirit working in your life.

Playing Golf: Patience, Focus, and Joy

Golf represents far more than aiming for a hole-in-one.

It has far more to do with patience, focus, and learning to find joy in the small victories.

Imagine you standing on the green course with a club in hand, you’re challenged to slow down and think carefully about each move, just like navigating life with God’s guidance.

It’s also about letting go of perfection. Not every swing will go as planned, but every mistake is an opportunity to grow, adjust, and try again.

And when you finally make that perfect shot, it’s a moment of joy and gratitude that reflects how God rewards persistence.

Kayaking: Peace and Reflection

I love to paddle over the waters. It’s a beautiful dance with nature, think about it—a chance to glide along rivers and lakes, feeling God’s creation all around you.

I haven't tried it in the ocean yet, but I would love too. Now that would give me an instant adrenaline rush.

What do you think?

The sound of the water, the rhythm of your paddles, and the stillness of the surroundings can quiet your mind like nothing else. Even better with sun shining and birds singing sweet melodies, bliss I tell you.

Kaying for me is a workout for the arms; and even more a workout for the soul. Kayaking teaches us balance—both physically and emotionally—and reminds you of the beauty of being present in the moment.

How to Begin: Start with a guided kayaking tour at a nearby lake or river. It’s safe, beginner-friendly, and a wonderful way to learn the basics.

While paddling, take a moment to reflect on how God calms the storms in your life, just like Jesus Christ calmed the storm for His disciples. Let the water remind you of His peace.

Playing Tennis: Energy and Determination

To be quite honest I used to think that Tennis is simply a game of hitting a ball back and forth and running to catch it; but I discovered that it’s an energetic way to build strength, focus, and discipline.

You can’t win by swinging aimlessly; you have to stay intentional. That’s such a parallel to how we need to live our lives—with purpose and direction from God.

The court becomes a place where you can release stress, challenge yourself, and celebrate the joy of movement.

What makes tennis special is its rhythm—the back-and-forth motion mirrors how life often requires quick thinking and a steady heart.

It’s about strategy, teamwork (if you’re playing doubles), and perseverance when the match gets tough. Every serve is a chance to reset and give your best effort, much like God’s mercies that are new every morning.

How to Begin: Grab a racket and head to a local court.

Many gyms or community centers offer beginner classes, and trust me, you don’t need to be a pro to enjoy it.

Use your time on the court to practice gratitude.

Thank God for your health, the ability to move, and the joy of learning something new.

Playing the Piano: Music for the Soul

Music has a way of touching our hearts like nothing else. Learning the piano goes beyond just a skill; for me, it’s a form of worship.

When you play, you’re creating something beautiful, and that in itself glorifies God.

Even if you start with the most simple melodies, the act of playing can bring so much peace and joy.

It sharpens your mind, helps you focus, and allows you to express your emotions in a way that words often cannot.

How to Begin: If you don’t have a piano, start with a keyboard. There are so many beginner tutorials online, or you can take lessons from a local teacher. Try the Oranjemund Art Center.

Use your practice time as a form of worship. Play your favorite hymns or even create your own melodies. Let the music flow from your heart to God.

I got my dad's old keyboard and I can't wait to start creating beautiful melodies.

Why These Activities Matter

Here is the thing: God wants us to live full, joyful lives. Trying new activities like these isn’t just about having fun (though that’s definitely a big part of it!). It’s you stepping into the freedom and creativity that God has placed within you.

When you engage in something that refreshes your soul, you make room for the Holy Spirit to move in your life.

Allow yourself to enjoy recreational activities to relax and rejuvenate, you deserve it.

These moments—whether you’re riding a horse, swinging a golf club, hitting a tennis ball, kayaking through serene waters, or playing a melody on the piano—are opportunities to connect with God in unique and meaningful ways.

You are a brilliant creator. Embody it.

So, here’s my challenge to you to try recreational activities to relax and rejuvenate

Life is too short to spend all your free time scrolling on your phone on X, Tik Tok or Instagram or feeling stuck in a boring routine.

Pick one of these recreational activities and give it a try this month. Even if it feels a little out of your comfort zone, step into it with faith and excitement.

Who knows? You might just discover a new passion, experience the Holy Spirit in a deeper way, or simply find joy in the moment.

And remember, whatever you try, do it with gratitude and a heart open to God’s presence.

I’d love to hear what you’re excited to try—let me know in the comments or shoot me a message. We need to grow, explore, and glorify God together!

You’ve got this, Champ. The Holy Spirit is with you every step of the way. 🌟

As always, remain faithful. I love you.

Jesus loves you so much more.
